Welcome to another stop along our “Farewell to Texas” tour!
As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, we compiled a list of all our favorite places in Texas we wanted to visit one last time before we move. The Japanese Tea Garden was high on our list and we are so glad we made time last Friday afternoon to visit. We’re down to only seven weekends left and it’s becoming a mad dash to squeeze everything in. Eek!
********************************
Renovation of San Antonio’s Japanese Tea Garden began in 2007, with construction finishing in 2008. When M and I first moved to San Antonio in the summer of 2004, the garden was nothing more than a rocky wasteland. It is now a city treasure and a popular photography destination for weddings, senior photos and quinceañeras.
According to the website, a Chinese-American family operated the garden during the 1960’s when it was known as the Chinese Sunken Garden. Although it has since been renamed to the Japanese Tea Garden, the sign remains the same.
Although the Garden is stunning now, it’s even more beautiful when all the flowers and crape myrtle trees are in bloom. Maybe we’ll make one more trip here before we leave. 😉
The Japanese Tea Garden is conveniently located within Brackenridge Park and has a lovely shaded trail that connects the park, Japanese Tea Garden and the San Antonio Zoo.
We know, gorgeous, right? For the past several months, whenever we visit one of San Antonio’s many beautiful parks, we look at each other and say, “are we crazy for leaving?”.
Several years ago, the San Antonio City Council adopted a TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) program. Trapped cats are neutered and cared for while they recover. Kittens and tame cats are then put up for adoption and those deemed wild are returned to their familiar surroundings and cared for by volunteers. Brackenridge Park is home to a large feral cat population and this structure is one of many throughout the park that provides shelter, food and water.
We continued our walk back through Brackenridge Park until we made it back to…
…Gus’s car! Now that he was tired from our walk, it was time for us to get our run on. 🙂

You are so fortunate to have so many “dog friendly” places to visit. It is nice to have special places to go where both you and your dog can enjoy:)

Very pretty…especially the stone bridge. So many former rock quarries have been turned into beautiful gardens. I heard Buchart Gardents in Canada was a former rock quarry too. I am sure you will find a lot of amazing places on your trip that will make you not miss San Antonio so much.

There’s actually a waterfall in the gardens? That’s amazing. I would love to see what the Jinju House will look like after the restoration works have completed. Maybe you’ll have more reason now to revisit the Japanese Tea Gardens after your trip!

That looks so wonderful. I have been to San Antonio one time and fell in love with that City. The Riverwalk was one place I got to visit while I was there. If I was ever force to move I always said it would be San Antonio it was beautiful and the people oh so friendly. All my family live in Texas but I stayed in Illinois. My parents live in Crystal Beach near Galveston and other family are in the Houston area and one nephew in San Antonio. We are going to have to go back and read your blog to find out where you are moving to. Where ever you live I am sure your journey’s will be interesting. HoundDogMom (Sherri)

Oh what a pretty tea garden. But I like San Antonio’s animal friendly nature! What a wonderful policy. Wish they had that in Dallas. If anybody knows of an equivalent policy in Dallas, please drop a message to Opie’s Mom. She has a friend that needs that information.
Great photos of Gus as ususal.

Nice place. Koi pond is so pretty. BTW, what kind of harness does Gus have? I like that way it doesn’t sit under his neck. Many harnesses have high neckline so when pulled, it look so uncomfortable… like I choke my dog.
According to Gus
April 21, 2011
Thanks – we adore the harness too. It’s a Buddy Belt. We actually have plans to blog about it – we won it in a FIDO Friendly giveaway and LOVE it!
Our previous one had a high neckline too and this one is so much better!

What beautiful pictures! It’s awesome that Gus gets to go everywhere with you! I wish I loved riding in the car more… I know that mommy and daddy would definitely take me more places if I did.
I actually tried on a Buddy Belt at my doggie hospital — it was really comfortable, but for my size really expensive. And I don’t like to wear a harness unless I’m riding in the car, so it wouldn’t have gotten that much use. 😦 I thought it fit great, though!
Woofs & hugs,
~Bailey

Obviously, Canada needs to loosen up– I checked on-line for you, and the Montreal Botanical Gardens (Jardin Botanique!), which has a Japanese Tea Garden AND a Chinese Garden, does not allow dogs other than guide dogs. Why are you getting that passport again? 😦
