About

Welcome to According to Gus, the blog about a small dog with big adventures!

Gus was born on March 7th, 2005 and welcomed into his forever home on May 5th, 2005.  In homage to Cinco de May0, the date is now referred to as Cinco de Gus.  Although the translation is nonsensical, it’s catchy and Gus approves!

When we first met Gus, we were told he was a pekeapoo, but we’ve since had our doubts.  Although thoughts of mail-in DNA testing crossed our curious minds, the idea was nixed and we lovingly refer to him as our “mystery dog”.

Gus has opinions on anything and everything and isn’t afraid to express himself.  According to Gus will include posts on eating, playing, sleeping, traveling, and our relentless desire to obsessively fawn over him.

We are planning a trip around the U.S. and Canada in 2011 and are looking for the best dog-friendly destinations to eat, sleep, and play.  We are seeking assistance from fellow dog lovers/bloggers on places that top their “must-visit” list.  We hope our blog can provide useful information for other travelers who don’t want to leave their furry family member behind when they travel.

Thanks for stopping by.  We look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Gus, thanks for stopping by my blog and the lovely comment. I’ll be sure to pass it on to Finsi. 🙂 – just like you she’s a mystery dog. I still don’t know what breed she is but I love her all the same, even though she always gnaws on my toes whenever I get near her.

  3. Gus is the cutest, and uber clever, too! As for DNA testing, my vote is chihuahua / king charles spaniel.

  12. Dear Gus,

You are such a cutie! What a wonderful doggie life you have: eating your way around the city, travelling to new places, and playing to your heart’s content. If you’re ever in my part of the world, i.e. Singapore, give me a bark =)

    Sincerely,
    Miss Little Red Maple Leaf

  16. This is awesome! It takes guts to quit your jobs and sell your house to travel across the country, and I wish I had your bravery! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I wish you and Gus a safe and happy journey.

I’ll definitely be checking back with you regarding Gus’s reflections on the road trip. I’ve traveled a little with my dogs, but we tend to camp rather than stay at motels–although we did stay at an absolutely disgusting Econo Lodge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during our trip from Boston to Ohio last year. I don’t recommend it. It was only $44 a night, but I would have been happier sleeping in a tent. The dogs liked it, though, because they got their own bed. If you’re traveling to the Boston area, I can definitely give you some recommendations for some doggie-friendly digs. And if he wants a play-date, my retrievers are always up for a romp at the ocean.

P.S. My grandmother’s dog’s name was Gus. He was a Belgium sheepdog mix, and when she adopted him, he was “as thin as a stalk of asparagus.” He was a wonderful dog. After she and my grandfather were in a really bad car accident, she trained Gus to retrieve the newspaper from the bottom of the driveway for them. He was SO proud of that job.

  21. I’m amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog that’s both
educative and interesting, and without a doubt, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something that not enough folks are speaking intelligently about. I’m very happy that
I came across this during my hunt for something concerning this.
