Hi, Friends!
Long time, no blog! We can hardly believe it’s already been a week since we posted last Friday about our departure from San Antonio. We are happy to report that we made it safe and sound to Iowa last Sunday afternoon and just arrived in Denver about two hours ago.
Let us back up a bit and give you a quick recap of how we spent our last seven days:
- Day #1: Departed San Antonio, drove through Oklahoma and arrived in Wichita, KS at 2:30 am
We took one last photo of Gus in our now empty living room.
- Day #2: Arrived in Overland Park (Kansas City), KS late morning. Gus and I hung out in the lobby at Drury while Katie and Mitch visited their first brewery of the trip. Boulevard Brewing is located in Kansas City and their wheat brew is one of their all-time favorites. They came back to the hotel with a six-pack of pint glasses – they better not keep that up, or we’ll be shipping pint glasses back to Iowa every couple of weeks. 😉
- Day #3: Departed Kansas City bright and early in the morning, drove through a bit of Missouri, arrived in Iowa and spent the afternoon visiting our extended family. It was SO nice to see everyone!
- Day #4: Spent the day unloading the ABF trailer and tucking away all of our boxes and furniture at our parents’ houses. Thank goodness they’re both empty-nesters and have lots of extra room to accommodate a houseful of our belongings! Mitch relished being back in Iowa where freshly baked goodies awaited his hungry belly. Katie and I were surprised that he didn’t turn into a sugar cube before we left.
- Day #5: Besides eating three, humongous, delicious homemade meals, we also squeezed in a nap (or two) and continued to organize all of our stuff. It was as overwhelming to find a spot for all the boxes as it was to pack them all.
- Day #6: We finalized a few last-minute details and spent our last day in Iowa packing up everything we needed for the trip and worked on getting everything in the van. It was our intention to post our Gus packing list weeks ago, hoping you could all point out anything we might have forgotten, but sadly, we ran out of time. Hopefully we have everything we need!
We couldn’t resist snapping a quick photo of Gus next to one of my dad’s corn fields. We will snap another when we’re back in Iowa in a couple of months to see how much it’s grown!
- Day #7: We departed Iowa this morning at 7 am and hit the open road! We made a few stops in Nebraska and arrived in Denver approximately 10:30 pm last night. We were all very relieved to be out of the van!
Seven days, seven states!
Thank you for all your well wishes as we started our travels. We’ve been offline since this past Sunday and felt so fortunate to see your kind comments on the blog, Twitter and Facebook. We can’t wait to catch up and see what you have all been up to this past week!
We’ll be back soon with our first hotel recap and some Denver posts!

I love the picture of Gus all curled up sleeping and the one of him in the cornfield! I am exhausted just reading about your week of packing and unpacking. But I guess the reward is all of the goodies and home-cooked meals. 😉 Have fun on your travels. Can’t wait to hear all about them!

Wow, you’ve done so much in just 7 days! Good think you found the time for napping, I think you’ll need a lot of energy for this trip. I love the photo of Gus in front of the cornfield…I don’t think anything can phase Gus, he seems to take everything in his stride. I guess he’s happy anywhere, as long as he’s got his mum and dad with him.
I bet it was wonderful to be reunited with your families, even if it was only for a short while…
Can’t wait for more travel updates…Have a safe trip! x

It was SO wonderful to be reunited with our families – it felt so good to say, “see you in a few months”! We’ll be staying in Iowa for a week or so before we head on to the eastern portion of the trip!

Sounds like the first week went well. I agree about the naps, take them whenever you can. I like the corn field pic too, I may be wrong but it may be cut by the time you get back. But I am not an expert on corn crops, you probably know more than I. But it will be neat if it is not.
I should have told you about the Gorilla pod. It’s a really cool flexible tripod. I used to use one with my old DSLR and for the life of me can’t figure out where I put it.
http://joby.com/gorillapod/slr/
coupled with your camera’s timer you could easily get some great shots of all 4 of you and not have to take as many double shots. I really liked mine when I had it. And if I don’t find it soon may end up ordering another.
Have fun!

Are you planning to hit all 50 states? I am extremely weird, and have a thing for state capital cities. I read this and thought, “Did they even STOP in Lincoln?”
(Who’s running this trip, me or you?) 🙂
And I just keep thinking, “Every day they get closer and closer to visiting ME!” I am SUCH a narcissist!

We will hit the lower 48 + D.C. Alaska and Hawaii are just a bit too far. 🙂

Glad you made it to Iowa and onto Denver safe. Hope you are finding your way around Denver ok. I found Denver to be the hardest City I have been to to drive around in. I got lost so many times! I went to the Denver mint when I was there. It was pretty cool.

Hi Y’all,
So glad y’alls trip is going well.
Can’t believe how little the corn in Iowa is! Here in the southeastern Low Country it is mostly burned to a crisp and will never make. The corn that managed to be irrigated or was lucky enough to catch some rain from a passing storm, is ready for harvest. The grain has all been harvested and new crops are well along in those fields. The drought continues here, really hurting the farmers.
Gus, sitting in the empty living room, it looks like a tear in your eye.
Just wanted y’all to know that we knew when we presented the award to y’all that it would be awhile before you had time to mention it. However, since we love your blog, we still wanted y’all to get it.
Y’all stop when you can,
