We did it!
The moving container is loaded and was picked up yesterday evening. Our belongings are now on their 1,165 mile journey to Iowa. If everything goes as planned, the trailer will be waiting for us when we arrive on Sunday.
We must admit, our nerves are frayed, our bodies are fatigued and we’re in desperate need of a cocktail (or two). Luckily, we left behind a few staples to get us through the rest of the week. Bread, milk, almond butter, beer, vodka and olives. You know, the important stuff. 😉
We wish we could report that Gus handled all the ruckus as cool as a cucumber, but sadly, he was quite upset the entire time we were packing and loading. All of our traipsing in and out of the house with boxes and bags did quite a number on the poor little guy. To top it all off, he had his annual exam yesterday (we know, terrible timing on our part), and had to endure shots and having his blood drawn. We’ve done our best to keep him calm and comfortable, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t worried about him.
Thank you so much for all your well wishes this past week. We’re so grateful for the friends we’ve made through the blog and it makes our hearts melt to know you were thinking of us. 😀
We hope you’ve all had a great week so far. This is the first time we’ve been online in days and can’t wait to catch up on blog reading. We’ve missed our blog friends!

Well done, guys…There’s no changing your minds now. I have to say that both Gus and Mitch look exhausted in that last photo. Thank God you’ve held on to the vodka and olives 😉

Awe poor Gus! I bet he was worried that he was going to be packed up too. Sounds like an exhausting weekend.
(I hate to admit it, but you have no where near the “stuff” that we would have if we were moving…lol.)
Good luck on the rest of your move!

We sold a lot of our things this past year – we were so glad we did, too. We still managed to use 21 feet of that truck! Yikes!

way to go! and with room to spare! I’m sure Gus will settle down for you soon. Once he realizes you two aren’t going anywhere without him all should be gravy. If you really feel things are bad you can try lavender on some of his blankets, or get a natural remedy called “Rescue Remedy” has natural calming agents in it. I used it on our old dogs during storms and it seemed to work. Would take some of the edge off for him. Or go for a run/walk that’ll get him centered again.
Take care

Woo hoo! So exciting! You are on your way to an awesome adventure!
It’s not easy for animals who don’t know what’s going on. When we moved across the country three years ago with our cat, it took him quite awhile to adjust. He wasn’t a great traveller to begin with, however. I’m sure once Gus figures out that nothing important is changing, that no matter where you go, the three of you will always be together and he will always be included in your plans, he will relax and enjoy the ride!
Lots of luck!

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement, Kristine! We’re hoping he gets used to the new routine. We know he’ll love being with us all the time – and we can’t wait to spend our days with him. 🙂

Our girls had a hard time too when we moved from CA to Boston with all the packing and boxes (not to mention the very long drive x-country). I don’t think dogs like changes to their surroundings all that much. But it’s only temporary! I’m sure Gus will be very happy in his new home! 🙂

I hope Gus feels better soon, poor little guy. I am sure once the trip begins he will settle in and relax, if not he can always come stay with us:)

I’ve missed you too Lori – every day that I didn’t see a post from you, I thought about how overwhelmed you all must be in packing your things up. It’s so good to see you back!
Oh, poor Gus! I can understand how disconcerting this would be to any up; everything is changing so fast! I’m sure he’ll get used to his new life – as long as he’s with you and Mitch, he’ll be happy! 😀
I’m so excited for you!!

Yay and this trip is gonna be SO much fun!! Just remember every detail doesn’t have to be perfect as it will all work out and you’ll have fun regardless 🙂 So looking forward to hearing all about it 🙂
Sorry to hear Gus was upset, I get upset too when I don’t know what’s going on (cos they never tell me), sure he’ll be fine once he realises you guys are still gonna be with him and that he’s actually joining you on this big adventure!

I can imagine what Gus’ nerves must have been like. We did a frenzied 2 hours of heavy cleaning (moving areaq rugs, vaccuming, picking up all our clutter, temporarily moving their dog beds, etc)yesterday in preparation of a parental visit from Shawn’s parents and Gretel and Chester totally freaked out 🙂
Good luck this week. It will fly by….unless you run our of vodka nd olives. Ha, ha.

Change can be so hard on doggies. I hope you can get Gus calmed down. When we travel I always take Roxys blanket,Torreys bed, and some toys from the house. That helps them both. Good luck.

I’d like to echo some of the commentators who said they missed seeing your presence in the blogosphere over the last week. I, too, was thinking that you guys must have been very busy bees. I was also thinking that if we didn’t see a new post on According to Gus by mid-week, then someone really ought to head over and check under the washing machine! 😉

Awww poor Gus! Lincoln is the same way, even when I am packing up the car for a trip so I know how harrowing it can be on the pups. On a happier note, you are finished packing–hooray!! Sorry Gus is stressed. Have you considered looking into one of those natural calming supplements, like Rescue Remedy or Melatonin?

Checking off loading the moving container from your list must take a lot of weight off your shoulders. Just reading about all the preparation you’ve put into your trip is exhausting!
I admit, I worry about how Gus will adapt to his new life since dogs like predictability, but I’m sure he’ll adjust quickly with you and Mitch supporting him. He’s one of the most adventurous dogs I know! Can’t wait to read about your new adventures! 😀

I saw an ABF trailer in my nabe this morning and thought of you guys! I’m sure Gus will relax once he realizes that he’s going along for the long and fun ride but I would also expect a transition period for you all.
I’d love it if you’d post about Gus’s set-up for the car. I recently adopted a Lhasa/Terrier mix who really likes to try and get into my lap while we’re driving (I discovered this when we had to take an unplanned road trip from LA to Portland) so I’d like to get him a booster seat or similar and I’d be interested to see how Gus rolls!

I sure hope you all get some sleep tonight. Maybe a couple of beverages are in order. 🙂
Gus will be so thrilled that you aren’t leaving him by himself in an empty house! He’ll get used to the road, and you all will be just fine. 🙂
Safe travels!

Been off-line for two days, but my first thought turning on the computer tonight was, “Wonder how the packing went!”
