TGIF!
Can you hear that tapping? That’s the sweet sound of our Friday happy dance. The last couple of weeks have been monsters, stress-wise, so we welcome today with open arms. We’re taking the afternoon off for a little travel planning + fun in the sun. M and I procrastinated and MUST stop by the USPS today to apply for our passports. We hear Canada is great and all, but we think our families would miss us if we couldn’t re-enter the U.S. 😉 After that, we’re off to the Japanese Tea Garden and Brackenridge Park. Pretty flowers + Gus park walk + running while Gus hangs out in his car = awesome. The only wrinkle in our fun afternoon plans is the expected 96 degree high for today. WTF! It’s only April!
As promised in our Wednesday post, we are including some photos of the two DIY camera straps we made this past weekend. And when I say “we”, I mean “I”. M and Gus couldn’t care less about our camera strap. Boys…
I’m a visual person and was all excited about photographing each step so I could post an entire DIY camera strap tutorial. So, here you go:
What? You aren’t able to craft a strap cover using this one, lone photo? 😉
Obviously, as I got moving along in my project, I neglected to take photos. Oops. Click here for the fantastic tutorial I based my pattern off of. If this one doesn’t float your boat, a quick Google search will display tons of other examples. Here are the modifications I suggest in case you decide to sew your own cover using this tutorial:
- Cut the print and solid fabric 23 1/2 inches by 6 inches wide
- The extra length will cover more of your strap and the extra width is for the lens cap pocket
- Add a pocket (cute buttons, optional) to hold your lens cap
I did not use coordinating thread, do not own a rotary cutter and used a regular ruler. So no worries if you don’t have all the materials listed on the tutorial!
And if you’re thinking to yourself, “what is she doing spending hours making camera straps when they’re constantly complaining about how much they have to do”, you’d be absolutely correct. In retrospect, it wasn’t the best use of my time, but it’s oh-so pretty. This camera strap will visit most states in the U.S. and part of Canada in a couple months…it needs to look good, right? Good. I’m glad you agree. 😀
The strap in the above photo was my first attempt last Friday evening. I loved the watercolor print in the store, but when it was fashioned into a small strap, I wasn’t digging it. I knew I should have went with my gut and purchased something bright and colorful. So, back to the store I went on Saturday…
Much more fun, right?! I used a 40% off Hobby Lobby coupon for the buttons. For an additional $.65 I think it added some serious pizzaz.
The pocket keeps the lens cap as snug as a bug in a rug.
The grand total in material expense for both straps was a mere $7!
Not too shabby for someone who had to call their mom for help on threading a bobbin!
M graciously agreed to model the new strap cover for a quick photo. Luckily, he’s 100% (okay, maybe 70%) comfortable with sporting a pink and yellow camera strap with aqua buttons. 😉
And what was our sweet dogger doing while the sewing machine was buzzing away? Hanging out at the table with us, of course.
We hope you have a wonderful Friday and fantastic weekend. For those who will be around tomorrow, we’ll see you for the Saturday Pet Blogger Hop. Adios!

Love the camera strap, very creative. I’m a shutterbug myself and love the idea of a unique strap for the camera and a great pocket to hold that sneaky lens cap that always seems to get misplaced:)

camera strap covers are great! What’s no so great is paying 30 bucks for them. You did a great job with these. The tutorial I used is a bit more fitted on the ends with a secret entrance for the strap so everything is covered and stays in place. I will have to try and dig it up so I can share and make more. I have never been able to take “photos as you go”during cooking or projects so kudos to you. It’s good to take time out on occasion to do something creatively productive even if it’s not on your to-do list. I do it all the time, some call it procrastination. 😉
Have a great weekend

The camera strap came out great! Very pretty and very creative. I even liked the first one. Kind of looks like camo. 🙂
Gus looks a little bored with the process…lol. Still those are great pictures of him.

Love, love, love the camera strap. The colours are great and the cap pocket is genius! I’m always afraid of losing my cover, I’d feel so much more comfortable if it had it’s own place right close to the camera.
Hoping you can swing through Winnipeg on the Canadian leg of your trip.

Now that I love. A lot. It looks very trendy. I’d say it looks good on you, but that would be a guess, since you cut your head out of the photo 😛
Have a nice weekend, guys.x

You’re VERY talented – mine wouldn’t look half that good even if I worked on it for a month! I didn’t inherit any sewing genes, I guess… The strap is tres chic – I love it! Great idea to include the cap pocket, I’ve lost several caps over the years. Love the photos of Gus too! Have a great weekend!

96 degrees? I feel soooooooo sory for you. Not 🙂 It was 50 and dumping slush here yesterday.
The camera strap is cool. I especially like the pocket for the lens cap. I have lost 2 in the last 3 months.
And as always……the photos of Gus are great.

that is so cool! i especially LOVE the pocket for the lens cap. i have lens cap leashes for most of my lenses, but sometimes they come loose, and i end up having to just hold them or put them in my pocket — this is so much better!

Great choice of print! It’s so snazzy that you just want to pick up your camera and start clicking away. I should consider making a camera strap, too, especially since the weather here is humid all the time and the strap gets worn out so easily from sweat stains. YUCK! Anyhoo, have fun toting around your pretty camera 😀

Lori,
You are seriously talented, that sewing looks perfect and the fabric choice is great! I could just imagine lying on the floor chewing on that strap, ooops, I digress!!
Mum wonders why we didn’t get to see M’s face, we’d have loved to see the smile on his face as he proudly showed off his new strap! 🙂
Are you going to make Gus some new collars especially for the trip? He could have a new one for each State? Maybe you don’t need any more distracting ideas……:)

HAHAHAHAHA You kill me. First, the camera strap is ADORABLE. And nice thought on taking pictures during the process. I’m always amazed at people who do this– whether cooking or DIY. I’m always waaayyy too impatient to get to the finished product to take photos all along the way. And, like you, there are fuzzy subjects who are waaayyy more interesting to photograph. Second, cheers to M. Third, lesson learned: go with your gut when it comes to fabric and have fun with it.

Thanks for the wonderful tutorial! I just finished mine. I made the measurements on mine a little longer as I am using a cannon. I used 25 inches for the length and 6 inches for width. I also added the pocket making it 6 inches by 5 inches tall. I used glitter buttons to add a bit of sparkle and I have to say that I am in total AWE of this strap! Great share! Now I won’t have to rub my neck raw with the horribly sharp edges on the strap! 🙂 Great, Great Great share… I LOVE your material as well! 🙂

P.S. I’m so using glitter buttons on my next cover. 😀
