Word Whiz Wednesday #12: Park

Posted on February 23, 2011

According to Gus, park is his favorite word to hear on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  The routine is always the same:  wake up, go do it, eat breakfast, watch his parents wash the dishes and then head to the PARK!  Gus wants everyone to know the stomping and whining fits he throws while he’s waiting are solely due to his excitement, not because he’s naughty!

Like most dogs we know, Gus is fanatical about walks at the park.  The mere mention of the word sends him into a crazed frenzy.  It’s so obnoxious we resort to spelling it out, P-A-R-K.  If you enjoy receiving oddball reactions, spell P-A-R-K (or any other word) in front of non-dog people.  They’ll scoff and look at you as if you’ve lost your marbles.  Guaranteed.

Comanche Lookout Park was one of three park visits this past weekend.  It’s very close to our house and the trail loop takes approximately 45 minutes.  It’s a perfect place to take Gus on the weekends or when we need to escape during house showings.

According to the City of San Antonio website, the CDC reports over 2/3 of Bexar County residents are overweight or obese.  Yikes!  Powered by a federal stimulus grant, Mayor Julian Castro created a Fitness Council and is taking steps to reduce the obesity epidemic in San Antonio.  The city recently added fitness stations (examples pictured below) to several parks.

On a side note,  M and I ran in a charity 5k hosted by the San Antonio Spurs last year.  Not only was Mayor Castro there to support the runners and walkers, he also participated!  We’re hoping his enthusiasm for health and fitness encourages others in SA to get up and get moving!

Cool, right?  The stations are located throughout the park and include instructions and recommendations.  My sister and I ran at another city park on Monday afternoon and the fitness station area was packed!  It was great to see so many people interested and using the stations.  Keep it up, San Antonio!

Although it appears we placed Gus on a precarious perch, M’s hand was holding up Gus’s butt…we swear!

We could stare at his cute fuzzy butt and bushy plume tail all day long. 🙂

Something obviously smelled particularly enticing on this tree.  He lingered here so long we finally had to nudge him along.

King of the mountain rock!

Comanche Lookout Park:  15551 Nacogdoches Rd  San Antonio, TX  78247   5 a.m.-11 p.m.

+ Quiet and serene during early morning hours (8 a.m. or earlier)

+ Heart-pumping workout during hike to the top (fourth highest point in Bexar County)
+ Great views of the city

– Feces along the trail (use the provided poop bags, dog parents!)

We hope you’re having a fantastic week.  We’re still recovering from house showings and prepping for more this weekend.  We have every intention on writing a post on how to keep your (and your dog’s) sanity while selling a house…as soon as we figure that out. 😉

It’s Wednesday and time to head over to BlogPaws for their Wordless Wednesday Linky.  We’ll update our post with the code when it’s available.  Happy Hopping!
