According to Gus, all treats should include a healthy shake of parmesan cheese on the top.
After viewing the Canine Crouton recipe on DogTipper, we knew it was something we had to try. Like most dogs we know, Gus loves cheese, especially parmesan. He even knows which canister it’s stored in and the sound the lid makes as it pops off. We kid you not, Gus comes running in the kitchen seconds after the lid is opened. Needless to say, these treats were a hit! Thank you Dog Tipper for allowing us to share this recipe!
Psssst….this post has A LOT of photos! If your finger gets tired of scrolling, skip to the bottom and view the nifty slideshow.
Being the Type A control freak that I am, we started out by organizing all of our ingredients. We had exactly three pieces of whole grain bread left in the pantry which was perfect since we planned on cutting the recipe in half.
To cut down on fat and calories, we opted to use olive oil and chicken broth instead of bacon fat.
We thought we’d give Gus a sniff of the croutons before we popped them into the oven…the little stinker snuck in a quick lick too.
After 40 minutes in the oven, they were ready. Golden, crunchy and beautiful!
Whoa…check out those crazy eyes!

Thank you, DogTipper for allowing us to share your recipe! The croutons were a big hit with Gus and we enjoyed the leftovers in a bowl of tomato soup…YUM!
Hope you all have a fantastic Saturday! Besides long walks at the park, we’re hoping to do some more cooking for Gus. We’re anxious to try Doggy Dessert Chef’s Parmesan Mini Meatballs and Life With Lulu (and Wally, too!)’s Chicken Jerky. We’ll see how ambitious we feel by this afternoon. 😉
We’re participating in this Saturday’s Pet Blogger Hop. Click the image below for the rules and how to enter your own link. Happy Hopping!

Yes, much cheaper than store bought and a great way to use up bread. Plus, they truly are delicious on soup/salads for humans too. Win-win 🙂

Those croutons look delish! Gus sure looks excited to eat them! 🙂
Lu loves parmesan cheese, too. She won’t eat breakfast without it… I have to say “Lu, you want your shakey cheese?” and sprinkle a tiny bit on top of her kibble. The funniest thing is that she doesn’t wait for it at dinner time, only at breakfast! Silly doggy!!
You should definitely give the jerky a try. It’s SO easy! Thanks for the shout-out! 😉

They look delicious AND easy to make! Maybe our Mama will make them for us on Monday. We KNOW she will NOT make them for us today or tomorrow, because after Gramma cleaned out the fridge today, the dogs among us got into the garbage and ate a LOT of junk food! So Mama says no more treats until we’ve digested it all. But Gus sure looks happy!

I have yet to make a treat that Luna didn’t eat.. Wyatt will eventually eat them (would never guess he was a lab with his eating habits). A staple is dried sweet potato pieces.. But the latest favorite is what I am calling the “Blueberry Snaps” I just made, they both love them. Maybe I will start a recipe section on Luna blog.. there’s an idea.
